Prospector Jonathan Harvey (Paul Kelly) strikes gold in the California foothills but his greedy partner, Lin Taylor (Bruce Cowling) kills him in order to take everything for himself. Harvey's faithful dog Shep (Lassie) seeks revenge on Taylor.

Trivia: Director Harold Kress was better known as an editor. He was nominated six times for Best Film Editing Oscars and won twice for his work on How the West was Won and The Towering Inferno. The Painted Hills was the seventh and final film in the Lassie series.
