Ben and Hoss hire a trail gang to drive a herd of cattle from Texas to the Ponderosa. They pick up a cultivated drifter named Sam Jackson on the trail North, but unbeknownst to the Cartwrights; their trail gang leader, Jackson, and the sheriff of a town along the trail already know each other.
