Gunslinger Clayton Drumm is spared from hanging when he agrees to kill an aging gunfighter (Warren Oates) who refuses to sell his land to the railroad. Drumm can't bring himself to kill the man and ends up running off with his wife (Jenny Agutter).

Trivia: The film's title refers to the location of Warren Oates' farm, 9 miles from the town of China, 37 miles from the town of Liberty. Warren Oates starred in Sam Peckinpah's classic movie The Wild Bunch. Peckinpah himself makes a cameo appearance here as an East Coast dime novel writer. Jenny Agutter (Catherine) is best known for her roles in the 1981 cult classic An American Werewolf in London, and 1976's sci-fi thriller Logan's Run.
