Lin Vanner (Lew Ayres) kills a coworker suspected of robbery. Suffering feelings of guilt, Vanner seeks out the dead man's widow (Teresa Wright), falls in love and marries her. Later he discovers who really did commit the crime and ends up falsely accused of murder.

Trivia: John Sturges was best known for action films like The Magnificent Seven. Teresa Wright received three Oscar nominations, winning Best Supporting Actress award in 1942 for her role in Mrs. Miniver. She was married to producer/screenwriter Niven Busch (The Postman Always Rings Twice) when this film was made. Lew Ayres was nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for Johnny Belinda (1948), his second wife was the actress Ginger Rogers.
